Born in Soweto and growing up in the small town of Mankweng in Limpopo, Joe Letswalo, the Principal Executive Officer of the Transport Sector Retirement Fund (TSRF), learned his early life and business lessons from his grandmother – the family matriarch.
At her feet, Joe learned to listen intently and developed a keen interest in people, the world and what makes it go-round. Without any formal training, but with a depth of knowledge, Joe’s grandmother inspired him to venture out into a world of academics and business.
Joe holds B Proc, LLB and MBA degrees, and international executive post graduate certificate from the London School of Economics . He is a qualified Professional Principal Executive Officer and Chartered Principal Executive Officer and serves as a non-executive director in various companies, particularly in the mining sector.
Joe is considered to be the key driver behind the Transport Sector Retirement Fund’s transformation journey. With the support of the board of trustees, the Fund has tripled its assets in less than five years and its scope of operation now extends beyond freight and logistics.
In successfully managing a retirement fund, Joe believes it is important to be carefully geared for the market volatility with a long-term focus aimed at the retention of retirement savings to achieve an optimal return on investment and growth.
In this endeavor, Joe considers an impact investment strategy to be an essential aspect of growing and nurturing a sustainable economy – local direct investment is undoubtedly the best breeding ground for achieving maximum results.
When Joe is not mulling over business and financial matters, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, immersing himself in books or travelling to far flung places.
