Rowan Burger

Managing Executive: Client Strategy
MMI Holdings
Rowan’s responsibility is to understand the evolving financial services landscape from a client need and regulatory perspective, assisting the various MMI businesses to improve the financial wellness of their clients. This covers individual retail customers (Metropolitan and Momentum) and institutions in the Corporate and Public Sector. The key focus is trying to understand how an insurance company capability can create and protect value for clients.
Rowan has over two decades of experience in the financial services industry. Rowan is a qualified actuary and certified financial planner. His career started with 14 years spent at Alexander Forbes, eventually being responsible for Consulting Strategy in the Financial Services division.
After a brief stint at STANLIB, Rowan was transferred to Liberty as Head of Investment Strategy. In this role he was responsible for the investment returns of both policyholder and shareholder assets across the entire balance sheet.
At MMI he crafted the corporate financial wellness proposition, particularly focusing on how broader employee benefit programs can improve the productivity of their workforce.
He is a previous Actuarial Society of South Africa Council member and a current member of its Stakeholder Board. Rowan plays an active role in a number of industry bodies that are involved in deliberating the proposals for the reform of South Africa’s pensions system and debating these at NEDLAC. He is regularly invited by media and key stakeholders to share his insights on issues that impact the broader retirement landscape.
Rowan believes in the importance of establishing and entrenching a culture of savings in our country, and feels there is still a lot of work to be done in order to help South Africans achieve genuine – and sustainable – financial wellness.
